Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management
Keeping Dutch water management in good order, today and in the future, is one of the key duties and responsibilities of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. This involves both the quality and amount of water. We are developing a new Delta Plan to ensure that today and in the future the Netherlands is safe from water and has a sufficient supply of freshwater. This plan prepares our country for the consequences of climate change. For example, by strengthening coastal defences and dikes and by increasing the possibilities for storing freshwater, as well as by giving more room to the rivers. All of this is being done in cooperation with water boards, the provinces, municipalities and the business community.

Project IJsseldelta
The IJsseldelta is a low-lying area that is threatened by floods from both the river IJssel and from the Lake IJsselmeer. The Province of Overijssel initiated the process of drawing a sustainable development plan for the IJsseldelta area, with a strong focus on climate adaptation. One of the most recent ideas is to develop a climate proof dike − a kind of super dike along the river bypass − that at the same time can act as an embankment for housing development.

Waterboards: Delfland, Hollandse Delta, Schieland and Krimpenerwaard District
In the Rotterdam region three Water Boards are responsible for the management of water.  In this low-lying densely populated area of The Netherlands, the Water Boards manage not only clean and  treated water, but also the protection of the hinterland against the rivers and the sea. Thereby keeping to a minimum the chances of not only flooding but also of water shortages. For the quality of life for this socially and economically important area, water quality and safety is essential.  Inhabitants should also in the future, feel safe and live, work and recreate in a pleasant environment. Water and  spatial development are inextricably interconnected. In an urban area such as Rotterdam, the cooperation between The authorities, social organisations and the business community lead to a successful approach and advanced solutions.
